Abstract:
We show how language models relate to the concept of IR as uncertain inference. For this purpose, we use a specialization of the uncertain inference approach, namely the probabilistic concept space model developed by Wong and Yao. Based on this framework, the language models proposed by Hiemstra and by Ponte and Croft can be explained.
