Digital Library Glossary

This is the main page of the Digital Library Glossary.

A

Agent

  • A software tool that performs a function on behalf of an end-user (often with little or no direct interaction with the user).
  • In Dublin Core terms, the super-property of Creator, Contributor and Publisher. A person or corporate body.

AHDS

Arts and Humanities Data Service. UK service funded by JISC to collect, describe, and preserve the electronic resources which result from research and teaching in the humanities.

Ariadne

A parallel web and print journal for librarians and information specialists funded by JISC under eLib.

ASF

Advanced Search Facility.

Attribute/value pair

The combination of a metadata property and its value.

B

Broker

A network service that provides a single interface to multiple (often remote) network services.

DELOS

A series of projects on digital libraries funded by the EU:

  1. The DELOS Working Group (1996-1999) was funded by the EU within the Fourth Framework Programme
  2. The first DELOS Network of Excellence (2000-2003) was funded the Fifth Framework Programme of the EU
  3. The second DELOS Network of Excellence (2004-2007) was funded by the EU's Sixth Framework Programme

Abbreviation for Digital Library

Digital Library

A Digital Library is defined as:

  • A Collection of different services
  • And the collection of information objects
  • That support users in dealing with information objects
  • And the organization and presentation of those objects
  • Available directly or indirectly
  • Via electronic/digital means.[1]

Digital Object Identifier

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a system for persistent identification and interoperable exchange of intellectual property on digital networks. The International DOI Foundation manages development, policy, and licensing of the DOI system to registration agencies.

Dublin Core

(more precise: Dublin Core Element Set) is a metadata format defining a minimal information resource description, generally for use in a WWW environment.

Dublin Core Metadata Initiative

The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative is a forum engaged in the development of interoperable online metadata standards

E

Evaluation: Definition of Terms

====Accessibility==== Evaluation metric from the 5S model. ====Assessment==== The process of measuring, quantifying, and/or describing the attributes of a system covered by the evaluation

Availability

Best practice

Collaborative evaluation

====Comparative evaluation==== denotes the degree or grade by which a system or component has a property or quality greater or less in extent than that of another. ====Completeness==== Evaluation metric from the 5S model.

Construct

Context

Criteria

====Effectiveness==== how effective the evaluation will be, how many problems will be unveiled. ====Error analysis==== method for quantitative evaluation data collection. ====Evaluand==== That which is being evaluated. ====Evaluation device==== Instrument or application that is used as part of an evaluation process. ====Evaluation framework==== a defined structure of methods and supporting devices that is required to support the evaluation needs of a community. ====Evaluation goal==== The desired knowledge about a system, its performance or usability. ====Evaluation method==== A series of steps or actions taken to accomplish an evaluation. ====Evaluation model==== An abstract, general or theoretical representation of an evaluation approach. ====Evaluation parameter==== A parameter is a measurement or value on which something else depends. ====Evaluation==== The systematic process of determining the merit, value, and worth of something. Evaluation is broader than assessment and involves making a judgement as to the effectiveness of an assessment. Evaluation has a certain goal, method and devices or techniques. The goal suggests some evaluation criteria (e.g. performance), which sometimes break down to evaluation parameters (e.g. response time, availability). Sometimes these parameters are qualitative, sometimes quantitative. If quantitative, a metric can be defined on that. In case of metric the values are of course comparable among different evaluations. A successful evaluation should be transferable (apply to other contexts) and confirmable (verifiable).

Evaluator

The person, group or organization that performs the evaluation.

Focus groups

====Information behaviour==== patterns of behaviour that are generated between different classes of users and different information systems.

Interaction pattern

====Interactivity==== The ability of complex systems to detect and react to human behavior.

Interview

====Log analysis==== method for quantitative evaluation data collection. ====Metric==== A measure unit for some property of a system. ====Observation==== method for qualitative evaluation data collection.

Off-line evaluation

On-line evaluation

====Pace of evaluation==== how frequently evaluation will take place, with what aims and under which circumstances.

Performance

====Phase of evaluation==== at what stage of the development cycle the evaluation will occur. ====Precision==== A measure of the number of relevant documents in the set of all documents returned by a search. ====Preservability==== Evaluation metric from the 5S model. ====Qualitative==== A type of empirical knowledge. Qualitative data are unbiased and/or relative. ====Quality==== The desirability of properties or characteristics of a system or process. Quality is contextual. ====Quantitative==== Quantitative properties can be meaningfully measured using numbers; properties which aren't quantitative are called qualitative.

Questionnaires

====Recall==== The fraction of relevant material that is returned by a search. ====Response time==== The time a system or functional unit takes to react to a given input.

Service quality

====Simulations==== method for qualitative evaluation data collection. ====Test bed==== A collection of resources that can be used for evaluation purposes. ====Think aloud protocols==== method for qualitative evaluation data collection. ====Time analysis==== method for quantitative evaluation data collection. ====Timeliness==== Evaluation metric from the 5S model.

====Usability==== is the extent to which a product can be used to by specified users to achieve specific goals with effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in a specified context of use.

Usage studies

====Use case==== A technique for capturing the potential requirements of a system or software. Each use case provides one or more scenarios that convey how the system should interact with the end user or another system to achieve a specific goal.

Usefulness

User roles

User situation

User studies

User task

User-oriented evaluation

====Validation==== Testing to ensure the system is traceable to requirements. ====Verification==== Testing to ensure the proper functioning of something in technical terms.

ISBN

[International Standard Book Number], a unique machine-readable identification number for books. ISBN was approved as ISO standard 2108 in 1970.

ISSN

The [International Standard Serial Number] is an eight-digit number which identifies periodical publications as such, including electronic serials.

Projects

Personalization

Customization of information and interaction to user Different users have different characteristics and preferences concerning the information they are interested in seeing when accessing a digital library. Even users sharing a common information need may expect different results, different functionality or different interface. Moreover, the relevant contents and interface of a digital library may be dependent on other factors as well, e.g. device or network-specific.

Wrapper

A wrapper is an abstraction layer between a calling service and a source. The purpose if a wrapper is to encapsulate and delegate a unified interface or behavior to several sources. In the context of digital libraries, wrapper are often used to query and collate results from WWW based digital libraries. To overcome the costs of developing and keep a wrapper up-to-date, Wrapper Toolkits are availiable.
